Ever since I have heard about infusing flowers or herbs in oil, I knew that I had to learn how to do it for myself. Infusing flowers into oil just intrigues me. By infusing flowers into oil, you can extend the life and scent of flowers for the entire year. Count me in! Infusing oil is simple and easy, so let’s talk about how to infuse lilac oil.
Lilacs are an incredibly beautiful flower that grows in the spring. It has amazingly floral scent and is used a base for many perfumes. But have you discovered that after making a cutting of any flower for a vase in your home, that the flower scent and beauty fades after only 1-2 days and dies? That’s not fun when you want your home to smell pleasing all the time.
So, by infusing flowers or lilacs into oil, you get to extend the life and scent of that plant. In turn, you can use the infused oil around the home in many fashions. You can use the oil to make candles, chapstick, perfume, and scent for homemade shampoo or conditioner.
In addition, did you know that lilacs are edible? You can use the lilac oil to make cocktails, martinis, and flavored drinks, or even infuse lilacs into sugar or honey. Lilacs are a very versatile flower.
How to Infuse Lilac Oil
To get started infusing lilac oil, gather the lilacs off the lilac tree. You will need to take the flowers off of the branches and remove the green stems.
Then, lay the flowers out on a towel for 1-2 days or until the flowers dry out and release their moisture. Too much moisture in the infused oil can create mold. I know you’re excited to get started, but this is a crucial step. I leave the drying flowers in the garage in case there are bugs. In the alternative, you can use a dehydrator to dry the flowers, which is much quicker.
Once the flowers have dried, put them into a canning jar that has a lid that seals completely. I filled my jar to the top with the flowers. Then, I used olive oil and filled the jar with oil so that the flowers were completely covered. You can also use vegetable oil or sunflower oil.
Once the jar has been filled, leave the jar in a sunny place to infuse for about 3-4 weeks. Try and shake the jar every other day.
If you don’t like the slow and steady infusing method, put a pot of warm water on the stove. Place the jar into the warm water and allow to sit for a few hours with the burner on low.
Strain the Oil
At the end of 3-4 weeks, the oil needs to be strained out. Pour the oil over a coffee filter or a cheese cloth into a jar or a bowl, so that the flowers are caught and removed from the oil.
Now that the oil has been strained, you can use the oil. The oil will stay good for 6 months to a year. Keep the oil in a dark colored bottle to extend its life and keep it out of direct sunlight.
Lilacs are a very versatile flower because it can be used in recipes or in crafts. By infusing lilac oil, you can make candles, syrups, sugar, incorporate into a recipe, or anything that this floral flower can produce. Enjoy!
