All Natural Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner

When I first purchased my home, I was happy to discover that the original owner had purchased natural hardwood floors for the entire first floor.  The floors were even hand-stained by the owner.  That’s proud craftsmanship there!  But as with anything in a home, even floors eventually need to be cleaned.  So I created my own homemade wood floor cleaner.

In my farmhouse, there’s a lot of dust floating around.  I’m sure you have the same issue that I do.  With the natural foot traffic that comes through the house, there comes lots of dust and muddy footprints.  And sometimes, when the light hits the floor just right, you can see the layer of dust.  It’s not pretty.

With cleaning, it seems you can never do too much and achieve perfection.  The next day comes and it’s dirty again.  What’s with that?!  Cleaning is like laundry, it’s never ending.

So if you have to clean (and we all do), I like to clean with natural, non-toxic, chemical-free products.  Forget spreading all those chemicals around your home.  Going simple and natural makes me feel better about myself and my home.

The recipe for the homemade wood floor cleaner is deceptively simple.  Only 3 ingredients and you are ready to clean:

Mix the ingredients in a mop bucket and get to it using a mop with a microfiber clothThings to remember: Wood floors do not like standing water.  Try not to use a lot water, as the water can warp a wood floor.

If you are using a spray bottle:

  • 3 tsp. White Vinegar
  • 16 ounces of Distilled Water
  • 5 Drops Lemon Essential Oil

Mix together in a glass spray bottle.  Spray a little bit on the floor per section and clean with a mop and a microfiber cloth.

Distilled Water

Distilled water is a type of water that has been boiled to remove the original impurities in the water.  It’s basically purified water.  Distilled water is great for cleaning in that it does not leave behind water marks or spots.

White Vinegar

Here is where it can get touchy for some people.  Some say absolutely you can clean wood floors with white vinegar, others say not.  The trick is that vinegar can be used on sealed hardwood floors or pre-fabricated wood floors, but not on waxed or unfinished hardwoods.  If you’re not sure about your floors, do a test spot before proceeding.

The lightweight, low-profile BrightPad makes crafting easier while reducing eye strain.

Hardwood floors should be cleaned with a substance that is pH neutral (or close to neutral).  Vinegar is an acid and has a pH value of 2.40 – 3.40.  By mixing the white vinegar with distilled water, the acidity is drastically lowered.  The mixture is then effective to cut through the dirt and dust, which creates a streak-free and clean floor.

Lemon Essential Oil

I could go on for days about how much I love lemon essential oil.  Lemon essential oil has so many natural cleaning uses that it is the ideal oil to turn to for cleaning.

I think I was finally sold on the oil when I saw on a mom on Facebook showing off her kid’s science experiment.  There were 3 petri dishes and each contained a cleaning agent.  One was lemon essential oil, the second was bleach, and the third was Clorox.    After three weeks, the only petri dish that did not have any bacteria growth was the lemon essential oilAfter that, I was all in!

Lemon essential oil is a natural cleansing agent.  It’s non-toxic and can be used to clean surfaces and the air when diffused.  It has a nice fresh and clean smell, but it also has antifungal, antiseptic, and antiviral properties.
