This recipe is for a quick and easy tomatillo salsa. Tomatillo salsa is a green salsa that can be used to add as a kick to any meal. It also tastes great as a dip to be eaten with tortilla chips.
I’ll admit that I didn’t know what a tomatillo was until I met my husband. I would sit down at his family dinner’s table and for each meal there was a red salsa and a green salsa. For a Mexican family, salsa is just a way of life. The red salsa is made with tomatoes and the green salsa is made with tomatillos. Now I’m sharing the family’s recipes with you! 🙂
To make the tomatillo salsa, put the tomatillos and jalapenos in a pan and roast until they are blackened. This adds a char flavor to the salsa. Do not skip this step. If you do not roast the tomatillos, then you will need to boil them until soft. But I find that roasting adds more flavor.
Once charred, add all of the ingredients to a blender. I use a Ninja blender in my kitchen and it’s amazing. It was a wedding present and I use it everyday to make this or my easiest salsa ever. My blender came with three attachments. The two that I use the most are the 16 ounce smoothie cup (for a smaller batch of salsa) and the 72 ounce pitcher (for my big batches!).
Blend all of the ingredients together. Make sure that you taste the salsa before serving to see if it needs more salt or another jalapeno for heat. If it’s too thick, just add a little bit of water.
Some ways to use the tomatillo salsa can be as a dip for quesadillas or poured over grilled chicken, which adds a little spice. Enjoy!
- 8 or 9 Tomatillos
- 2 Jalapenos
- 1 bunch Cilantro
- 1 Tbsp. Oregano
- 1/2 Tbsp. Cumin
- Salt to taste
- Roast the tomatillos and jalapenos in a pan until blackened.
- Blend the tomatillos, jalapenos, cilantro, oregano, cumin, and salt in a blender. Puree until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add a little bit of water.
