Spring is in the air! I love to be outdoors and spend time with my chickens and my goose. Unfortunately, mosquitoes LOVE me! I don’t know what it is, but I could be outside for five minutes and get 10 mosquito bites. That definitely puts a cramp in hiking, camping, or anything that has to do with being outdoors…I just don’t like getting bit.
And then there’s my husband. He doesn’t get bit by mosquitoes, at all. It must be his Latino blood…all those hot peppers flowing through his veins…
So lately, I’ve taken to making my own DIY bug spray with essential oils. Yay for non-toxic, no chemicals, and no deet! I put my blend into a spray bottle and keep it around the house. Before going outside, I spray my arms, legs, torso, and neck, and viola, no bug bites.
Further, this DIY bug spray is also handy to spray around doors that you know are going to be opening and shutting quite a bit, such as if you are going to be hosting a party. During the spring, summer, and fall months, I get a bit paranoid and I’m constantly spraying the doors to keep mosquitoes out. But guess what? It works!
DIY Bug Spray
Combine all of the ingredients in a glass spray bottle. Shake to combine.
Frankly, TerraShield is a powerhouse essential oil. It is a blend of Ylang Ylang, Cedarwood, Catnip, Lemon Eucalyptus, Litsea, Arborvitae, Nootka, and Vanilla Bean Absolute. All of these oils are natural “vapor barriers” for plants, which means that the oils protect the plants from threats. If the oils can protect plants against bugs, then this oil can protect us against mosquitoes.
Next, lemongrass is an oil that naturally repels insects. It has a slight citrus scent and is also great for skin care, as a muscle relaxer, and boosts energy.
Will the wonders of oils never cease? Eucalyptus essential oil is effective to treat insect bites and stings and is antiseptic and antibacterial in nature. I apply eucalyptus on mosquito bites and the itch goes right away. Simply reapply when needed.
DIY Bug Spray with Essential Oils
In conclusion, I hope that this simple DIY bug spray with essential oils works for you in your home. As with any product, test it first to ensure that it works in the area of the country where you live, as well as compliments your body’s natural chemical composition.
